Question of the hour: can you pop popcorn with cell phones? A YouTube video closing in on one million views this week purports to show a group of people doing just that. In the video, three phones are aimed at a few kernels of popcorn arranged in the middle of a table; the cell phone numbers are dialed; the phones ring; the corn pops instantly. There is no detectable trickery.

Trickery there must be, however, because, as a simple matter of logic, if your cell phone emits enough electromagnetic energy to pop popcorn, it should also make your head explode. When was the last time that happened to you?

The Museum of Hoaxes’ Alex Boese figures there must be a heating element hidden under the table. A physics professor consulted by Wired.com concurs, suggesting there may have been some sneaky editing involved as well.

Some folks think the video — which is actually just one of several posted in different languages at roughly the same time — may be part of a viral marketing campaign for some as yet unknown company. Alex Boese points out that the premise is reminiscent of a widely circulated satirical piece many mistook for fact a few years ago claiming it’s possible to cook an egg with a cell phone (the yolk was on them).

Don’t miss Steve Jobs’ big announcement today on cnn.com/live and CNN’s app for the iPhone starting at 1:30 p.m. ET.

(CNN) — Apple users will get to watch live today as the company, at an event presumably led by CEO Steve Jobs, announces new services and products.

Everybody else is out of luck.

Late Tuesday, Apple announced that it will be live streaming the 1 p.m. ET event on its Apple.com website.

Viewing requires a Mac running the Safari web browser (on Mac OS X version 10.6 Snow Leopard), an iPhone or iPod Touch running the operating system iOS 3.0 or higher, or the iPad.

The blog post announcing the streaming is short on other details.

Tech analysts on Wednesday were saying that this is the first time they can recall a company making news available only on its own products. The move was also seen as typical of Apple, whose products employ their own walled-off operating systems.

Immediately after the announcement, speculation about the logic behind the move began.

An emerging theory is that Apple will announce upgrades to its Apple TV service (with a report from Bloomberg saying it will include the ability to stream movies from Netflix). The live stream may be a way to show the capability to Apple users in real time.

The iTunes Store also is expected to get an upgrade, and that could include streaming ability that Jobs may want to show off.

The live stream could be a sort of trial run for any new streaming technology the company will announce.

Iowa State University ended its first week of classes with a Quasimodo-style rendition of Bad Romance.Tin-Shi Tam, ISU carillonneur and associate professor of music and theatre, performed the Lady Gaga hit on the Bell Tower’s carillon at noon on Friday, while back packed students walked the surrounding paths to class. Starting on Labor Day morning — when we’re more likely than normal to sleep in — Channel 12 will push its morning news back to 4:30 a.m.

The change fits into the national trend, with the mornings a rare growth area for local TV newscasts in markets around the country.

Channel 6 already starts its weekday morning newscasts at 4:30 a.m. It would be a surprise if Channel 4 didn’t follow.

Turning to radio for TV people: Channel 6 has turned to two non-TV faces as it completes the staff list for its new “Real Milwaukee” program, launching in the 9 a.m. weekday slot a week from today.

How To Close All Multitasking Apps on iPhone by One Tap

You may already know how to close multitasking apps (a.k.a. background apps) on iPhone running iOS 4.

Presently, you can only close multitasking app one at a time. Some of you wonder if iPhone offers a way to close all background apps simply by a single tap.

There is no such app on App Store. But if you are using a jaiilbroken iPhone, there is a hack called “Remove Background”, which is an add-on for SBSettings. With the hack, you can simply launch SBSettings and tap “RemoveBG” button to close all apps running in background.

By killing the background apps, you can free up a certain amount of memory. The “Remove Background” is a free hack available via Cydia. To use the hack, you need to first install SBSettings. For usage of SBSettings, you can further check out our earlier post.
